Culture

This category is dedicated to the discussion of Japanese culture. We talk about unique experiences that you should not miss when you come to Japan. We have quite a few recommendations to offer. And what suggestion is high on the list?

Go to an izakaya! These eating and drinking establishments light up the night of every large city and small town all over the country of Japan each evening. When you see the bright lights and red lanterns and hear all the noise, you know you've arrived! Izakaya large and small are the hub of social activity at dinnertime and late into the night.

You might want to start the evening with an order of Sapporo beer on tap, a fried white bait fresh garden salad loaded with a heavenly citrus sauce and a hotplate of juicy beef topped with ponzu sauce. Who will you see at an izakaya? Mainly groups of friends, many of them coworkers--salary men and office ladies, who come to wind down, eat, drink, and socialize after a long day at work. The atmosphere at an izakaya is really special. See the post "Let's Go to an Izakaya"  for details.
